It seems impossible to Jon Carroll that anyone at the New York Times -- or anyone in journalism -- thought of Deborah Solomon's interviews as anything more than an amusing fantasy. "Of course she rearranged stuff, rewrote stuff, telescoped stuff. Real interviews don't go like that. What she was writing were screenplays. ...I never thought I was getting David Halberstam; I thought I was getting a public entertainment, much like the cartoon strip in the same section. I mean, is everything in 'Metropolitan Diary' checked? I didn't think so."
