Minneapolis Star Tribune
Ben Welter suggests desperate circulation managers borrow the century-old idea. The Tribune reader who spotted the "mysterious Mr. Sly" on Minneapolis streets -- and had a copy of the newspaper in hand -- won $250. Welter writes: "One fellow who bore a vague similarity to Sly was dragged to the Tribune 11 times by folks eager for a prize that amounted to about $5,400 in today's dollars."
