Patrick J. Leahy and
Arlen Specter say
the episode shows a "pressing need" for legislation pending in the Senate that would provide greater legal protection for journalists. The phone records of Washington Post and New York Times reporters were apparently obtained as part of a terrorism investigation, but the FBI hasn't explained what it was investigating or why the records were considered relevant.
