The National Enquirer's Alexander Hitchen recalls confronting John Edwards at the Beverly Hilton on July 21. "Would you like to say why you were at the hotel this evening to see your mistress Rielle Hunter and your love child?" he asked. Edwards froze and "turned pale," Hitchen tells Gabriel Sherman. Edwards ran as Hitchen continued with his questions. "Do you think for the sake of your child, you should admit paternity?" he said. PLUS: The Enquirer chased the John McCain fling story, too.
