From the Toledo Newspaper Guild's report on the March 9 contract talks:
The session opened with a presentation by Guild member George Tanber, who spoke eloquently and convincingly about the need for The Blade to abandon its practice of mandating that datelines be placed on stories where the reporter was not on scene. The Guild has proposed adding language to our contract to ensure that the paper’s use of datelines meets generally accepted industry standards. Mr. Tanber showed the Company representatives how the practice, spelled out clearly in The Blade’s stylebook and enforced on a regular basis, is not ethical and weakens the newspaper’s credibility, as the Guild contends. The Company’s attorney said he was impressed with the presentation and would pursue the issue within management – one of the few other positive moments of the night.
