When Do We Say We're a Couple?
I have a question that I'm sure many people have dealt with in the past. My boyfriend and I are both reporters, and we want to move to a bigger paper. We have each started preliminary interviews with one large metro paper where we would both love to work. The paper seems interested in both of us, though everything is still early in the process.

When is it appropriate to let them know we are a couple? We don't want to endanger each other's chance of getting a job by making them think we'd only come as a package. And we each want to be evaluated on our own merits. But of course, we'd both love to work there. So far, we've been dealing with different editors, so they may not have realized they've got two applicants from the same paper. Any guidance?

Thanks,

Lois Lane

I wouldn't bring it up until it becomes relevant.

It seems that won't happen until someone gets an offer.

Then, both of you will want to bring it up with the hiring manager you're working with, to try to get some sense of what the chances are that both of you can get hired there -- and how soon.

If you both get hired, that is certainly the time to mention it.
Coming Tuesday: Fired after just a few months into his first newspaper job, he wonders whether his journalism career is shot.
