Following Boyfriend to Residency?
Q. I'm a young reporter with a good job at a mid-sized daily. I've been at the paper for about a year. My boyfriend is in his last year in medical school and looking at residency programs all over the country. I'd like to move with him.

As he interviews at different programs, is it smart to go with him and set up informational interviews at newspapers in those cities? Or is that premature? He might interview at a dozen places or more. But ideally, he will take my job prospects into consideration when he picks his top programs.

Thanks in advance,

St. Elsewhere

A. It feels premature.

The number of cities, to begin with, is huge.

Also, editors might not be happy to give time to someone who may come to their city -- dependent on a choice by a hospital to hire her boyfriend.

Wait until your boyfriend has narrowed his preferences and then examine his list, investigating only the papers you're on the fence about.

Better to visit all the papers in key markets you're interested in than just one or two in a dozen places.

Coming Monday: He wants to do overseas reporting and hopes to break in as a relative newcomer who can do a couple of really excellent pieces a year.
