Tools for advocating visual principles without antagonizing others; methods of persuasion and conflict management; smart ways to boost your career, your staff's clout and the cause of visual excellence. Description: It's 25 years after the dawn of the visual revolution in newspapers. Where are we now? What have visual journalists accomplished in newsrooms, and what work remains? What can we learn from those who've reached the top of the profession? In what ways do visual journalists hurt their own cause? How can we work with staff and other leaders to advance great visual work? We'll search for answers, review our progress, look at our challenges, learn from influential visual journalists and set personal and collective goals at this one-day summit.

In this seminar, you'll learn how to tell the stories that examine the changing role of religion in society; that explore how faith affects people's lives; and that explain the values people live by. You'll develop compelling enterprise story ideas about people's search for the sacred, discuss how to cover federal funding of faith-based social services, find out which religions are on the rise and on the decline, learn how to use the Internet as a reporting tool, and develop a larger and more varied source base.

Mid-level editors lead up, down, and sideways in their newsrooms. In this seminar, editors will identify and hone their leadership skills. You'll learn to coach, motivate, and develop staff; develop strategies for collaborating with colleagues on goals, priorities, and plans; and enhance your ability to develop newsroom cultures with other editors who value ethical decision-making, diversity, and constructive feedback.

Travel and hotel paid by Poynter Poynter brings together a select group of outstanding journalists - sharp thinkers and gifted practitioners who are committed to excellent and ethical journalism. You will explore key issues including the tensions between journalism and business values, the challenges of covering an increasingly diverse society, and public concerns about invasion of privacy. We'll anchor the sessions in the real-world issues of the newsroom, connecting ethics to craft and leadership. You will strengthen your ethical decision-making and develop techniques for effectively coaching ethics in your newsroom. The Ethics Fellows will come to St. Petersburg for a week in March and three days in December. In the interim, they will stay connected with one another and with Poynter faculty, and they will research and write essays or articles on ethics issues to be published in the Poynter Report and on Poynter Online.

What a confusing and challenging time this is for educators. The industry is changing around you and journalism schools must anticipate the skills graduates will need to enter the workplace. This seminar focuses on the growth of convergence projects among TV stations, newspapers, radio stations, and online sites. We will help you understand the specific skills you must consider teaching in order for your graduates to thrive in converged newsrooms. We will also examine best practices in the converged journalism world.

The opinion writer can be a powerful voice in the news, whether people are looking for insight, analysis, or just a good read. This sem-inar will focus on the practical mechanics of excellent writing that transform a writer's opinions into the kinds of creative, persuasive pieces readers want. You'll write columns, editorials, and essays as part of the seminar, while learning from two of the country's top writers, your seminar colleagues, and from a Poynter faculty steeped in storytelling technique.

2/2/2003 - 2/7/2003 1/3/2003 Information Graphics (G402)
In this seminar, participants will learn how to create news graphics with impact and credibility. We will discuss what it takes to improve your communication, research, and design skills. You'll learn how to write headlines, how to write text for your graphics, and how to do your own research. We will start with basics and finish at the advanced level of information graphics. On the technical side, you will use new software such as Flash and 3D applications. In addition to print graphics, this session also touches on online graphics and 3D animation applications for print publications.
